Health Care Futures Program
The Health Care Futures Program provides Island students with summer employment in health care facilities and Department of Health programs throughout the province.
Students from across the Island will be hired to work in the public and private health care sector along side health professionals. Students have the opportunity to gain meaningful work experience while contributing to our health-care services.
One of the program's primary objectives is to expose students to the health care field. Job shadowing, mentoring, and opportunities for students to observe health care professionals at work are important to the program's success.
Facility staff will coordinate job duties and supervise the students. Job duties may include those that enhance the comfort of patients and residents, and those that provide assistance with social and recreational activities.
There are two types of full-time (37.5 hours per week) placements - one beginning in June (12 weeks) and one in July (8 weeks). Students may be required to work evenings and weekends. Health Care Futures participants will earn $9.00 per hour.
To be selected, students must:
- complete Grade 12 as of June of this year and be interested in pursuing a health related career, and/or
- be currently enrolled in a health-related education program.
Students who participated in the program previously are eligible to participate again, provided they are currently enrolled in a health-related education program.
A large number of applicants is anticipated and only those selected for placement will be contacted. Should a student be unable to accept the placement as offered, a second placement will not be provided.
Hired students will be required to obtain and provide a Criminal Record Check prior to employment start date. Some facilities require employees to adhere to a dress code policy.
APPLICATION DEADLINE IS MARCH 10, 2010.
